Tea Extracts: Thinking Beyond Leaf Teas



Tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world after water and has a long history. It is interesting to see the many varieties of teas processed all over the world and the almost infinite ways it is consumed. But also interesting to note are the various forms the tea leaf can be used in, other than the most common one of brewing tea leaves. One such alternative form of teas are tea extracts. A simplistic way of understanding tea extracts, or instant tea as it is more widely known, is that it is a concentrated form of all the goodness of tea. 

The tea unwanted compounds and retains the beneficial bits like Catechins, Caffeine, L-Theanine and numerous other phenolic compounds. Tea is widely acknowledged to have numerous health benefits, including antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory activity, anti-microbial effects, and anti- carcinogenic effects when consumed regularly. The phenolic compounds in tea are thought to be responsible for these effects. As a result, tea phenolics are thought to have valuable phytochemicals and receive a great deal of attention, leading to a ‘health-halo’ associated with teas.
